Important CIVIL WAR Campaign Trunk of Captain Edward P. Nettleton- Massachusetts 31st Volunteers
Item Details
Description
A historically important Civil War campaign trunk, named to Captain Edward P. Nettleton, 31st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was anointed the position of Captain on February 20, 1862, and commanded the E regiment until the completion of the war. The 31st saw action in many skirmishes, and he was wounded by musket ball on May 1, 1864 after repelling a rebel onslaught near the Red River. This trunk was on his person throughout the war. It is an impressive example, complete with all inserts. Inserts include compartments for maps, documents, personal items, and even alcohol. Under the dome is a removable hidden compartment, finely decorated and in attendance of a prayer page. On the exterior, it is marked 'CAPT EP NETTLETON 31st MASS VOLUNTEERS'. On the opposing side, marked 'EPN'. On the hardware/closure, there is an impressed military eagle cartouche. It showcases expected age and wear, on par with being carried from campsite to campsite over the course of the Civil War. It is an impressive piece of military history.
Condition
Condition is good, in consideration of the hardships it endured during the course of the Civil War.
