Hidden Treasures from japan
Jiro Yamada (1905-1997) was born in Okinawa Prefecture, graduated from Tokyo Kokugakuin University and founded Matsukaze Corporation in 1936. He acquired many rare works of art, particularly in the field of Chinese art, thanks to his close ties with the imperial family.
This exhibition presents a selection of Chinese art from the collection of Japanese collector Jiro Yamada.mostly sourced from Soichiro Asano and General Shang.
Soichiro Asano (1848-1930) was an industrialist. A native of Toyama Prefecture, he was the founder of the Asano Cement Company. He became the "King of Cement" in Japan after gaining dominance in the cement industry during the First World War, and gradually formed the Asano zaibatsu. He was also a great collector of Chinese art, with a particular preference for Qing dynasty imperial porcelain, and in 1922 he published The Asano Collection of Famous Chinese Porcelains.
Shang Zhen (1888-1978), of Shaoxing County, Zhejiang Province, was born in Baoding Prefecture, Zhili Province, and served as the Chinese representative on the Allied Control Council and head of the military delegation to Japan after the victory in the war. After the disintegration of the Japanese zaibatsu after the war, he lived on the sale of his collection, part of which was collected by General Shang.
