Item Details
Description
Title: Pablo Escobar Gaviria en Caricaturas 1983-1991
Author: Escobar Gavirio, Pablo
Description: 377, [1] leaves, printed on rectos only, consisting of title-page, portrait, 13 leaves of prologue and text, 8 leaves of photographs and portraits, 352 leaves of political and caricature cartoons featuring Escobar that were published in various newspapers starting in 1983, and colophon leaf reproducing Escobar's handwriting stating the printing was completed on June 2, 1992. 23x20 cm. (9x7¾"), full padded leather lettered in gilt, with Escobar's signature and thumbprint reproduced in gilt, original thin cardboard box. First Edition.Legendary modern rarity, self-published by the famous (or infamous) Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar while he was incarcerated in “La Cathedral,” a maximum-security prison in Medellín, Colombia. Only about nine, or possibly ten, copies of the book are estimated to have survived - nearly all of the small number published having been burned by the Escobar family after Pablo escaped from prison in July of 1992 (this according to a statement by Eliana Cadavid Escobar in 2005, who went on to say "Mine was saved because he gave it to my brother and it was not burned. I hid it in my house.") Pablo Escobar died shortly after in 1993, in a clash with police. The book’s contents are a compilation of cartoons relating to and photographs of Pablo Escobar Gaviria published in various periodicals from 1983–1991. Additionally, there is information about the origin and development of cocaine, including copies of documents signed by past government officials to acquire the cocoa seed for Colombia, leading to the “cocaine bonanza” in that swept the world. Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria (1949-1993), head of the Medellin Cartel, was perhaps the richest and most successful of the Colombian cocaine merchants, controlling over 80% of the cocaine trade at one point. Forbes ranked Pablo Escobar the seventh richest man in the world in 1989, with $25 billion. The book is a highly significant connection to both Escobar and the drug culture, which has so profoundly influenced social, political, legal, and military activities over the last half a century. The present copy is in exceptional condition, and includes the rare original cardboard slipcase.
