Description
Believed to date to approximately 1854 to 1859 as those were the years the compass maker, Adolph Tiensch, lived in Louisville. He moved to Memphis approximately in 1860 and his surveyor's equipment made after that time are marked Memphis. Compass face near the "S" South marking is imprinted "A. Tiensch, Louisville, Ky" Brass with compass cover/cap. Cannot find a reference to the other name "Schuman" stamped into the brass, although possibly a metal or manufacturing company that did the metal work surrounding the compass and the accompanying levels. Although difficult to see, there are perpendicular levels on each side of the compass. The leveling bubbles are INTACT and appear to be working fine. THE NEEDLE ON THE COMPASS MOVES BUT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE WORKING.
