Item Details

Description

A mining engineer from Poytechnique in Paris, he entered government service in 1934. Sent to England, Norway and Sweden, he was then attached to the Bas-Rhin region. He taught and carried out research at the University of Strasbourg, which made his reputation in geological circles. In 1861, he was admitted to the Académie des Sciences. From 1862, he taught mineralogy at the Ecole des Mines, becoming its director in 1872.
