GIORDANO, UMBERTO. (1867-1948). Italian verismo opera composer. AMusQS. (“Umberto Giordano”). 1p. Oblong 8vo. Milan, March 10, 1909. Two measures from the well-known tenor aria sung by Count Loris Ipanov, “Amor ta vieta,” from his masterpiece Fedora.
A pioneer of verismo opera, Giordano scandalized the musical world with his first full-length opera, Mala vita, and secured has reputation as a serious composer of considerable talent with Andrea Chénier. That work was followed by Fedora (for which the hat was named), based on the popular play of the same name written for Sarah Bernhardt by Victorien Sardou. Enrico Caruso created the role of Count Loris at its 1898 world premiere in Milan and its enormous popularity led to productions under the direction of Gustav Mahler in Vienna as well as in Paris and New York’s Metropolitan Opera from 1906-1908.
Written vertically on a lightly lined 5½” x 9” sheet affixed to a larger piece of black paper. In excellent condition.
