Description
SCHUMANN, CLARA. (1819-1896). German pianist and wife of composer Robert Schumann. LS. (“Clara Schumann”). 2¼pp. Small 8vo. (London), March 4, n.y. Written on engraved stationery to Miss Clinton.
“I thank you very much for your kind present of the beautiful flowers. – I was sorry not to be able to wear them as I got several bouquets for the same purpose and therefore not to offend anyone I went with my general flowers. – Of course I shall be pleased to see you again and then I can tell you why I do not agree to your plan... Give also to your sister my best thanks for the flowers.”
Clara began studying piano with her father, Friedrich Wieck, at age five, debuted with Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra at nine, and was soon hailed throughout Europe for her precocious talent. In 1838, she was appointed Kammervirtuosin to the Austrian court and was elected to Vienna’s Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. Among her most ardent admirers were Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, and a young student of her father named Robert Schumann, whom she married in 1840 after a secret and prolonged engagement. She lived for forty years after his early death at the age of 46. Clara Schumann frequently performed in London, making 19 concert trips there between the 1850s and 1880s.
Written on the first three pages of a folded sheet. Folded with minor wear and in very good condition.
