A collection of eight carved wood novelty walking sticks and canes late 19th / early 20th century and later two with handles formed as figures, the remaining six with handles formed as heads, the first two comprising a briarwood cane surmounted by a snuff mull modelled as a comical gentleman wearing a hat with inset glass eyes and bone buttons above a white metal collar and a cane surmounted by a kneeling figure of man on pierced ball shaft, possibly of Welch origin, the other canes comprising a painted example of the head of a bearded man, naturalistically painted with inset glass eyes above a carved ivorine and silver banded collar with rubbed Birmingham halls, two examples modelled as stained wood heads of bearded men, one with white metal collar, two examples with heads modelled with feathered hats comprising a lady with inset painted eyes and a young boy with upturned collar, the last, formed as a stained and polished stylised head of a man, possibly of Japanese origin, above an ivorine banding, the largest, 94cm long, the smallest 86cm long, (8) Saleroom notices: Please note that the walking cane in this lot with the carved and painted wood head of a bearded man as its handle has an ivory collar above a silver mount hallmarked for Birmingham 1902.
