This lot comprises one bottle of 1973 vintage Vega Sicilia Unico from the Spanish wine region of Ribera del Duero.

Some of Spain’s most highly valued and sought after red wines are cultivated in the banks of the Rio Duero. The area earned international acclaim thanks to the Vega Sicilia vineyard and pioneers such as Alejandro Fernández, with his cult wine, ‘Pesquera’. The Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto fino, develops a fine balance of full-bodied flavor and juicy elegance on the Old Castilian high plains. Premium wines are developed in French or American oak barrels. The best growths have the potential for many years bottle-ageing.

The 1973 vintage Unico was rated 90 points in a 1990 issue of Wine Spectator magazine.

The fill level is excellent (base of neck). The label and capsule are in perfect condition.

Vega Sicilia

Bodegas Vega Sicilia is a famous wine estate in the wine growing region of Ribera del Duero in Spain. Wine critic Hugh Johnson described Vega Sicilia as the Spanish equivalent of the famous Château Latour. The wine estate was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves. When Don Lecanda planted the vineyard he used Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which are still used for their wines to this day. When Lecanda fell into financial difficulties in 1888, he sold a part of Vega Sicilia to Pascual Herrero Bux, whose son Antonio Herrero Velázquez purchased the entire estate in 1903. In the early 20th century, it produced first-class wines under the leadership of cellar master Domingo Garramiola, which reinforced Vega Sicilias’ reputation as one of the most important wine estates in Spain and earning it a number of prizes at numerous wine exhibitions. The estate was sold to the Prodes company in 1952, Jesús Anadón took over the management of the estate four years later. He is largely responsible for the recognition of Ribera del Duero as an official appellation. The estate was purchased by David Álvarez in 1982 and Pablo Álvarez has led Vega Sicilia since 1985. The Álvarez family modernized the wine estate and invested in improvements and expansion of the vineyards. In 1992, the family founded the wine estate Bodegas Alión in Ribera del Duero, which has gained a similar reputation for quality as Vega Sicilia. Today the family also owns estates in Toro and in the Hungarian region of Tokaj. Moreover, the Álvarez family is one of eleven members of Primum Familiae Vini („Top wine families“), a very exclusive union of international family-owned elite wine estates.
