Description
Very Large , Old and heavy carved wooden female from the Senufo peoples, Ivory Coast, West Africa. Highly stylized example of a (Doogele or Poro Piibele) carved from a very heavy dense wood with undeniable age and patina from handling over many years. Rhythm pounders are used principally during a burial, where they are usually held by the arms. As masked dancers performed and the corpse was carried to the burial ground, the elders would take the tall wooden figures and pound with them on the ground in front of them, as if to clear a pathway for the deceased person. One of the very best examples we have ever offered. Condition Report: Very well handled and worn wood with a heavy patina of use. Overall solid condition with signs of wear. Provenance: Private Pennsylvania Collection Dimensions: 46 inches tall. Date: Early 20th century. **** This item must be shipped by our Third party Shipper.
