Description
7 ¾”h., clear lead glass, cut and engraved sugar bowl in an unrecorded pattern, clearly influenced by the Anglo-Irish tradition, bulbous body engraved with a berry and ray motif with matching dome lid, bowl resting upon a thick cylindrical pedestal flaring outward at either end , circular foot, polished pontil: Pittsburgh, Pa, c. 1820, mint condition, this exact sugar bowl is pictured in the book Pittsburgh Glass by Lowell Inness, on pg. 143, fig, 192, Inness says in reference to the bowls Anglo-Irish influence “ The general shape of the piece, however, and the sturdy stem and heavy stepped base bespeak Pittsburgh”. In regard to the aesthetic appeal it could not be finer, a blend of the old world and the new; this bowl ranks up there with the finest known Pittsburgh examples!
