IMPORTANT SIGNED NEW ENGLAND GLASS CO. FREE-BLOWN
Description
IMPORTANT SIGNED NEW ENGLAND GLASS CO. FREE-BLOWN AND PRESSED VASE, opaque white free-blown deep trumpet vase with a folded rim and a ringed waisted probably indicating a second gather, attached by three wafers to a pressed lion's head and basket of flowers monument base which is signed on interior "N. E. G. Co. / E.R. S.R.", the base is without feet and shows opalescence at the lower edges. The interior bottom of the vase displays a rough pontil mark which would have occurred when the vase and base were being joined. New England Glass Co. 1830-1850. 10 3/4" h, 5" dia rim, 3 1/8" sq base
Provenance: From an old New Jersey collection assembled in the 1940s.
Note: This previously undocumented and seemingly unique vase provides extremely important and irrefutable documentation in regards to the origin and production period of this trumpet-style of vase. While this type of vase has long been attributed to the Pittsburgh region, it has always seemed reasonable to assume that the style was also produced in New England. With the discovery of this signed example, we now have the evidence needed to add the New England Glass Co., and presumably the entire New England region, to the list of manufacturers of this bold and elegant form.
