Description
A rare Civil War era Pennsylvania oil speculation letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain James R. Holden, Titusville, Pa., Dec. 1, 1861, concerning the job opportunities of the Titusville oil wells, in part: "…I am writing at another oil well…and will probably stay all winter…oil is raising in price very fastened. There will…be plenty of work here this winter and good times…it is very sickly out here this winter. There was a great many cases of the diphtheria and some whole families of children have been taken away by it…one of them largest and oldest flowing wells, about eight miles below here, has blowed out and does not yield a bit of oil. So much…for the pumping wells about here…James R. Holden. VG.
