Item Details
Description
An exceptional late Victorian salamander or lizard brooch set with diamonds, demantoids, and rubies in 14K gold and sterling silver, Moscow, Russia, circa 1870 - 1900. During the later years of Queen Victoria's reign there was a great fascination with nature that led to the creation of a vast array of jeweled flora and fauna. Presented is a very fine and unusually large example of that era. The salamanders body has been expertly crafted out of 14 karat yellow gold and sterling silver. The detail is exceptional with even the underside of each leg receiving the same level of attention as the front; a true sign of quality. Fine milgrain work can be seen flowing along the salamanders spine from head to tail and a classic C clasp to the base completes this beauty. A total of 118 beautifully matched round gems, with very good color and clarity, have been pave set across the body of the brooch; 95 old mine cut diamonds totaling approximately 2.31 carats, 21 round cut demantoids totaling 1.02 carats and 2 round cut rubies totaling 0.02 carats, bezel set for the eyes. Demontoids, a rare green variety of garnet discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in 1868, fast became prized by jewelers due to their remarkable color and a dispersion greater than diamonds. The striking green color aptly suggested the skin tone of a living creature, making it perfect for reptilian subjects such as this. The pin is marked 56 for 56 Zolotniks, the Russian Imperial gold standard for 14Kt (confirmed with acid testing), and the makers initials ИY (IU). The piece in excellent antique condition showing only expected signs of wear and having been only lightly cleaned to maintain its patina. Mentioned for accuracy there is a small filing mark to the underside of the brooch that does little to detract from the overall splendor of this piece. It is rather substantial piece weighing approximately 15.35 grams and measures 2.91 inches (7.4 cm) long by 1.26 inches (3.2 cm) wide at the widest point. Truly remarkable & scarce!
