Catlow was part of a group of mid-Victorian-era women scientific writers who published mainly for children, helping to bring science education into the home. She was one of the earlier writers to publish a popular account of microscopy, which became popular in England in the 1850s.

Lithography (1796) - the process of printing using oil and water; the print is prepared on limestone or aluminum and pressed onto paper
