A FINE ENGRAVED LIGHT-BALUSTER WINE GLASS WITH COVER, colorless lead glass, round funnel bowl engraved with a pair of clasped hands within a crown-topped cartouche, the reverse inscribed "MIND GY EDELE VRIENDSCHAP TEEDER, VULD MY DAN TOOT AAN DEN RAND, DRINKT MY LEEG, AND VULD MY WEEDER, STELD MY ZOO UW VRIEND TER HAND.", raised on a slender double-knopped teared and beaded stem, and a plain conical foot with rough pontil mark. The domed cover features an applied beaded spire finial and an interior rough pontil mark. Probably Dutch, possibly Jacob Sang. Mid 18th century. 10 1/2" h overall, 7 5/8" h glass, 2 7/8" dia rim, 3 1/8" dia foot. .
Note: Two very similar examples without covers, one signed by Sang and the other with an identical inscription, from the glass collection of Dr. Otto Dettmers were sold by Sotheby's in London, November 23, 1999, lots #15 and #16. According to the catalog, the inscription, which translates as "If you value tender, noble friendship, Then fill me to the brim, Drink me empty and refill me, And thus hand me to your friend." is from a poem by Dirk Smits' "Gedichten", published in Rotterdam in 1740.

Condition report

Undamaged except for a minute nick (1/16") to glass rim and two under the foot, cover with a shallow chip to the inner rim
