Reuven Rubin was born in Romania in 1893. He immigrated to Israel in 1912 and settled in Jerusalem. A year after he traveled to Paris to study at École des beaux-art. He then returned to Israel. Rubin's work sings with the joy of living in country sides drenched with sun, blossoming flowers, luscious fruits and in silver foliage of an age-old tree.
Rubin identified with the biblical country of Israel, with its people and sunlit land. In his language of imagery he told us biblical parables in a magical and extraordinary way. Rubin is considered one of the most renowned and famous Israeli artists worldwide with works in collections of leading museums such as MoMA (New York), Museé d'art Moderne (Paris), Jewish Museum (New York) and others.
Landscape of the Gallil is one of the first works in print Rubin had ever made. It is a striking print showing the pastoral rural area of the Gallil, as seen through his romantic and nostalgic eyes. The village at the top of the hill with small white houses and red shiny roofs is surrounded by cypresses and olive trees. This extraordinary work has a striking inner glow that covers the entire print marvelously. Rubin died in Tel-Aviv in 1974.
