Description
An American Rococo Carved Mahogany Bedstead, mid-19th c., branded "C. Lee", arched, scalloped, paneled headboard with fan and cabochon cartouche, pendant fruit and nuts, finialed posts with beaded collars, conforming low footboard and rails, height 83 in., mattress length 76 in., width 64 in. Note: Beds with the C. Lee stamp appear in the inventories of New Orleans purveyors Calvin Chandler Simpson, John Yetter, and William McCracken in the years leading to the Civil War. Research by scholar and curator Stephen Harrison has revealed Charles Lee (active 1856-1868) was a Manchester, Massachusetts craftsman who was known regionally as a "maker of bedsteads for the Southern market."
