woman in red lace-trimmed ruched dress and pearl earrings, circa 1840, unsigned, oil on canvas, obscured stamp on stretcher with incised inscriptions including "429/81", 26-3/8 x 21-1/8 in.; late 19th/early 20th century gilt wood and composition reverse profile frame with acanthus decoration; lot accompanied by pre-restoration photo and research documents concerning portraits by Martin Johnson Heade. Original stretcher, four patches verso, crackle, retouch on chest and throughout background affecting 25 percent of surface, two periods of restoration; frame with some resurfacing. Provenance: Private Collection
