ALS, dated Wednesday, March 18 (probably 1847, during the Mexican-American War) to General Robert Patterson in Malibran (a city in Veracruz, Mexico) from General Winfield Scott (1786-1866, served as U.S. General during the War of 1812, Mexican-American War and for the Union Army in the Civil War), 15 lines inviting General Patterson and a guest to dinner that day, "I have, or shall have, a roast pig…for dinner today. My table is small, and my mess large, but if you can chance to drop in…I shall be happy to see, and indeed I wish to see you, on general matters…", 7-3/8 x 9 in. Folds, separations at folds, toning, foxing, remnants of wax seal still in place. Provenance: Descended through the Family of General Robert Patterson, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
