Buick traditionally occupied an enviable position within General Motors, by selling prestigious and profitable mid-to-upper level cars. Record 1955 production drove Buick to third place in the American car industry right behind Chevrolet and Ford, and the redesigned Century was a strong contributor. The Century was the "performer" in Buick's model line, combining the powerful V8 engine of the Roadmaster with the lightweight body of the Special. In fact, during testing by Motor Trend, the Century out-accelerated even the mighty Chrysler C-300!
This 1955 Buick Century Convertible Coupe, one of 5,588 produced, is a fine example of the dynamic Buicks of the 1950s, and the car continues to benefit from its body-off restoration. A white power-operated convertible top and an abundance of chrome accents offset the handsome orange finish. While some scratches are evident in the brightwork upon close inspection, they do not detract significantly from the overall presentation of this fine automobile. The Century is also equipped with dual chrome mirrors and an orange top boot, along with 40-spoke Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels surrounded by period correct whitewall tires.
The interior features well-fitted white leather upholstery with orange carpeting, and displays virtually no wear. As well, an aluminum insert and a restored steering wheel highlight the orange dash panel. This very well-equipped Century also features an optional Dynaflow automatic transmission, along with power steering and power brakes. Interior amenities include a Sonomatic AM radio with a power antenna, along with power windows, heater, defroster, and an electric clock. In addition, the detailed trunk features a bumper jack and a spare tire that is mounted on a chrome wire wheel. The detailed engine bay is finished in orange with black inner fenders, and cradles the correctly finished 322 cubic inch V8 engine. Moving underneath the car, the frame has been painted in black, while the floor pans were refinished in body color orange.
Today, collectors appreciate Buick's innovative styling and engineering. Many have discovered that there are far fewer surviving Buicks than other American marques. As a period Buick sales catalogue noted, "Drive the Century and you command thrills that set the pulse of even a sports car enthusiast to pounding". This statement remains true today, and is exemplified by this Century.
