1905-1906, 11 Childs American History Papercuts
Description
Historic AmericanaHundred Year Old Child's American History Papercuts
1905-1906, Lot of 11 Child's Cut-Out Action Scenes From American History, Distributed by the Boston Sunday Globe, Uncut and Choice Extremely Fine.
This colorful group of 11 American historical scenes were distributed one a week in the Boston Globe Sunday edition during 1905 and 1906. Each print was designed to be cut, folded and sewn with thread, to form a sort of shadow box display. Such items are extremely ephemeral and rarely survive, especially uncut. Each of the unfolded prints measures 10.25" x 12" and has a blank back. The prints are copyrighted 1905 and 1906 by the J. V. Sloan Co. in New York City. The scenes in this lot are: 1. Battle of New Orleans; 2. Battle of Chapultepec (Mexican War); 3. Battle of San Juan Hill; 4. Battle of Gettysburg; 5. Sheridan's Ride (Civil War); 6. Molly Pitcher Manning Her Husband's Gun (Revolutionary War); 7. John Paul Jones (hoisting American flag on ship); 8. Battle of Bunker Hill; 9. Farragut in the Rigging (of his ship; Civil War); 10. Memorial Day (portraits of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant); 11. Lincoln and Tad (scene of a seated Abraham Lincoln talking with his son, Robert Todd). These original, turn-of-the-century, children's play scenes are all in excellent condition, uncut and not folded, some with chipped or rumpled corners, one or two with tiny margin tears (not affecting the scene). Probably much rarer than our modest estimate suggests. (11 items).
