Fargo" on stubs for American Express Stock, measuring 8.75" x 4" each, and completed in manuscript. These are early 1860 stubs completed by the founders of Wells, Fargo & Co. Henry Wells (1805-1878) was an operator of an express service between Albany and Buffalo, NY, later extended his service into New England and the Midwest. Was president of the American Express Co. and organized Wells, Fargo & Co. in 1852. William G. Fargo (1818-1881), was a co-owner of Wells & Co. and secretary of the first American Express Co., 1850. He helped organize Wells, Fargo & Co. for express service to California, 1852, became president of American Express Co. in 1873.
