Sergei Ivanovich Vasilkovsky (1854-1917) "Village motives", oil on panel, 2nd Half of 19th Century. Sergei Ivanovich Vasilkovsky (1854 Izium, Kharkov province - 1917 Kharkov) began his artistic career as a pupil of painter D.I. Bezperchi in Kharkov, followed by his enrollment in St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under famous landscape painter M.K. Klodt. During his years at the Academy he obtained four small silver medals, one small gold medal and one great gold medal - all for landscapes. In 1885 he graduated in rank of a class artist of 1st degree. He debuted as an exponent from 1885 (academical exhibition), continuing to regularly participate in exhibitions of various artist groups and societies. He spent some time abroad between 1886-88 on scholarship provided by the Academy, living consecutively in France, Italy, Spain, etc. After 1888 the artist permanently settled in Kharkov. Today, his works belong to various museum collections in Ukraine, Russia and most of former Soviet Republics. Still during his lifetime, the artist bequeathed majority of his works to Kharkov Art Museum.
