Catherine Strode, whose pseudonym is Joane Cromwell (from her family tree dating back to Oliver Cromwell), from Lewistown, Illinois graduated from the Chicago Art Institute with honors. She was head of the Laguna Beach Art Association, The Illinois Academy of Fine Arts of Chicago, and the Art Guild of the Fine Arts Society of San Diego. "Crom" with her own evocative style and unique way of conveying vivid color, pioneered new possibilities in oil paint color technology and established herself as a leader in the California Plein Air Movement including marine, landscape and portraiture painting.
