Autographs, Letters and Historical Documents

L'Autographe Auctions is delighted to announce the forthcoming auction of a major collection of autographs: two extraordinary photographs signed by Albert Einstein, a letter by the Spanish Saint Joseph Calasanz about mathematics related to Galileo, the complete autograph score of ?Don Bonaparte? by Alberto Franchetti from the Bonynge ? Sutherland collection and some important letters by Robert Schumann (asking his Leipzig publisher Kistner for advice on publishing a major collection of Lieder); Franz Liszt (in a beautiful and long letter addressed to a singer, Liszt wrote to him about the extraordinary London reception of some of his compositions). Then, there are numerous letters from Wagner, Debussy, Bellini, Berlioz, Donizetti, Puccini, Verdi, and many other nineteenth-century musicians. Some letters from writers follow, and two of them deserve particular attention: a letter from Maksim Gor?kij (who intends to translate a drama by Stefan Zweig. He is sceptical about the staging for the complexity and heaviness of the text). And again, Zweig is the protagonist of a splendid letter addressed to Arturo Toscanini, at that time in London as a music conductor, in which Zweig undertakes to organise, at Toscanini?s request, an appointment with Sigmund Freud. There follows a group of letters from essential painters such as Monet and Matisse, letters of Popes, European Royalties; important Napoleonic papers and English and French History and Literature letters. The sale ends with a large selection of Anglo-American contemporary literary letters and documents. We invite you to join us in this thrilling journey appreciating the brilliance of human expression and the enduring legacy left by these extraordinary individuals.
