John Lennon's military band tunic from the famous 1966 'Life' magazine photo shoot
The jacket worn by Lennon during the classic Henry Grossman photo session in which The Beatles revealed their 'new look'. The jacket is an authentic World War I era Military Band tunic, an incredible item of clothing which may very well have influenced the Beatles iconic apparel on the cover of Sgt. Peppers - perhaps the original 'Pepper' uniform? Consequently hundreds of pictures were taken at many locations of John wearing this jacket at the height of the psychedelic Summer of Love. Estimate on request.
In the Beatles Anthology Paul remembers: 'For our [Sgt. Peppers] outfits we went to Berman's…and ordered the wildest things, based on old military tunics'. John obviously picked up early on the vogue for military fashion adding 'Kids were already wearing army jackets on the King's Road; all we did was make them famous'...'W were the ones who were chosen to represent what was going on 'on the street'.
The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity who collected the jacket as a donation to the Salvage Army from John and Yoko in 1977, he then secured it for himself with his Manager's approval.
LITERATURE:
The Beatles Anthology, Apple Corps/Genesis Publications, London, 2000.
