Description
Irving Ramsay Wiles (1861-1948). "Portrait of Mrs. Donald McLean," 1910, oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches, signed, inscribed, and dated. Emily Nelson Ritchie McLean (1858-1916) was born in Maryland and became a prominent orator and served as President General of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution from 1905-1909. During her tenure she oversaw the completion of the groups headquarters, Constitution Hall, located near the White House in Washington, D.C. This painting, which is dedicated to her, was likely a gift from Wiles for her help in securing other commissions. She is also listed as as a client in the artist's personal ledger. In this portrait she is shown wearing a blue silk dress and ermine wrap, while pinned to her chest is her D.A.R. medal bar.
