Description
Set of 2 Pre-Columbian Artifacts. Fragments were made by the India's before 900 A.D. They were once complete figures-bodies and heads. Their religion was called a "fertility cult". There are several interpretations as to the purpose of these figures, but the one which appears to be the one most likely true is that the figures were held by the head and broken by hitting them together. The pieces were then scattered in the food-growing fields to help "fertilize" their crops and assure a good crop. They come from the gulf coast are of Mexico-between tampico and vera cruz.
These are museum quality pieces. The letter attached came from the consignor and provides the provenance for the items.
