Description
COOLIDGE, CALVIN. (1872-1933). Thirtieth president of the United States & First Lady GRACE COOLIDGE. (1879-1957). A pair of signed White House cards. (“Calvin Coolidge” & “Grace Coolidge”). Each 1p. 12mo. Washington, D.C., N.d.
Coolidge was governor of Massachusetts before becoming Warren G. Harding’s pick for vice president. Upon President Harding’s death in office, Coolidge assumed the presidency in 1923 and was elected the following year. “The Coolidge era was characterized by absence of crises, lack of spectacular political leadership, and the expansion of apparent prosperity,” (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Coolidge’s New England background formed the basis for his frugality, modesty, and unpretentiousness. After leaving office in March 1929, he remained deeply interested in current affairs and briefly wrote a syndicated column (the only president to do so), called Thinking Things Over with Calvin Coolidge, which appeared in nearly two-hundred newspapers across the country.
Grace Coolidge was a very popular first lady due to her vibrant and energetic personality which stood in contrast to her husband’s dour nature. Grace never took an active interest in politics, possibly because her husband rarely confided his political decisions to her. In fact, Coolidge’s famous press statement, “I do not choose to run for president in 1928,” was the first time Grace learned of her husband’s decision.
Lightly dust stained and in very good condition.
