Footnotes: Provenance Venduhuis der Notarissen, Den Haag, February 28, 1961, lot 129, sold as Dirck Vellert (Flemish, 1480-1547). Lemperts, Köln, August 5, 1969, lot 93. Sotheby's, New York, January 28, 1999, lot 488. Christie's, New York, Old Master Pictures, October 31, 2003, lot 48. Wolfs Gallery, Ohio. A Newport, Rhode Island, estate (acquired from the previous). N.B. This work has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD), who reported that it was already archived in their database. Scholars have been unable to find an artist matching the DV monogram, so they have continued to attribute paintings with this monogram to the Monogrammist DV. They add that the painting was probably painted in the southern Netherlands, likely in the early 17th century.
