Details/Condition: Beautiful image in this dynamic original woodblock limited edition (un-numbered) print on handmade Strathmore Pastelle paper (watermarked) with one deckle edge. This design illustrates the celebrated Aesop Fable, "The Geese and the Cranes" and is a print from her work illustrating a 1950 limited edition printing of "Aesop's Fables." The piece is hand-titled and signed by the author, with this Aesop title. Sculptor, engraver and illustrator, Elfriede Martha Abbe was born in Washington D.C. in 1919. She is best known for her abstract sculptures in wood and marble, wood engraving, fine printing illustrated with woodcuts and is especially interested in botanical illustrations. Abbe studied at Cornell University and Syracuse University. She won awards while at Cornell in 1938 and 1940. In 1948 she won the Tiffany Foundation Fellowship and in 1970 she won a gold medal from the National Arts Club. Abbe exhibited widely during the 1960's at the San Diego Fine Arts Gallery, the Carnegie-Mellon University, the National Academy of Design and the National Arts Club, to name a few. She also has a long history as a typographer and book designer, including operating the Abbe Press and the Southern Vermont Art Center Press.
The print is in near mint condition, the only imperfection is a miniscule freckle near the top edge not affecting image. The mat measures approximately 8.5" by 12.5". Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $10.50
