Description
12” h., ovoid shape stoneware crock, unsigned, but has this potter’s typical leaf and seed cluster motif with cobalt highlights, the “1823” is freehand on the other side; this is a beautiful example probably made at the kiln at Old Bridge set up by Warren & Letts across the street from the Morgan pottery. A couple after the death of Warren in 1813, General James Morgan wound up buying the factory from Letts and Warren’s widow, where Letts may have continued on, renting the factory from Morgan. By 1820, Joseph Remmey is believed to have been operating the Morgan owned Letts factory in Old Bridge while living in South Amboy; see antiques magazine, March 1938, page 42, for an article on the Remmey family which has similar crocks pictured.
