Item Details
Description
8”h., opaque white cased over in a thin layer of clear, lead glass, classic bulbous body with tight waist having a perfect sculpted mouth and pour spout,, the overall body design is shaped to perfection, exquisite semi-ear shaped applied handle, applied circular foot, pontil scar; Pittsburgh, Pa., c.1850, there is an in-manufacture hairline crack in the clear casing at the base of the handle, about one inch or better, otherwise it remains jewel like with a warm touch of fiery opalescence when introduced to direct light. This pitcher was made in earnest by a skilled Pittsburgh gaffer who would never understand our obsession today with micro condition issues; for a similar example see Pittsburgh Glass by Lowell Innes, plate 1, near identical example, but with the addition of a opaque purple interior.
Condition
Cooling crack in the clear casing only at the base of the handle, about 1" running horizontal: this occurred the day it was made, not properly annealed, or annealed at all, the pitcher retained many of the thermal stresses caused by quenching that significantly decreased the overall strength of the glass.
