This lot is for an exceedingly rare cabinet photograph of David Schley Schaff, who is one of the fathers of American football. Schaff was an 1873 graduate of Yale, but in 1872, he was elected the captain of the 1st ever Yale football team, and was single-handedly responsible for organizing Yale's first ever football game, which was played against Columbia at Hamilton Park. Schaff was also Yale's first football coach, as he served that role in 1873 (the 1872 team had no coach). This cabinet photo has the photographers mark of W. Notman, a prominent 19th century photographer, on its reverse. The photo is a standard sized cabinet photo, measuring 4.25 by 6.25 inches. The photo's mount has had its 2 bottom corners clipped, but is in otherwise beautiful condition. The last photo I show, is a an image from the book, "The Yale Football Story", which used the same image of Schaff. To my knowledge, this is the first photograph of Schaff ever offered publicly.
