Four-language ship's papers authorizing "John Hooper master or commander of the Brig called Jane of the burthen of 145 tons...lying at present in the port of Boston bound for South America and laden with Beef, Bread, Brandy, Dry Goods, Hats, Merchandise, Iron, Rum, Rice, Salt, Boards, Wine, Tobacco, Earthen Ware to depart and proceed..." Signed by Jefferson beneath text. Countersigned by Secretary of State Madison and BENJAMIN WELD as Deputy Port Collector and other officials. Ink a little uneven in Jefferson and Madison signatures; edgewear with several tiny nicks and tears with very little paper loss; occasional light foxing; else darkly engrossed with clear VG/Fine signature areas.
