40. JOHN HANCOCK Partly printed maritime DS, incorporating his name as "Thos. Hancock & Co." within text, 1p, 9"x4¾", Boston, Aug 22, 1763. Entirely engrossed in Hancock's hand. Authorization for Thomas Hancock & Co., "by order of Capt. Bruce Chief Engineer at Annapolis Royal" for the sloop Charming Molly anchored at Boston Harbor bound for Annapolis Royal, to carry cargo comprising "One Bag Containing Three Hundred Dollars, One hundred & Ten Joannes, Six Crowns, One half Pistarene & Eight Copper half pence" to be delivered "unto Thomas Williams Esq. storekeeper & Paymaster to the Hon. Board of Ordnance..." Most of red seal remains affixed at left margin with design still visible. Darkly penned. General light toning; small tear at bottom right corner with no paper loss; left edge slightly irregular. Document is laid to larger sheet and mounted with tears to sheet of no affect to document; mount partially torn and loose. At the time Hancock was a full partner in his wealthy uncle's shipping business, the House of Hancock. When his uncle died the following year, he was heir to the firm and other properties.
