Goncharova was one of the most respected Russian avant-garde artists of the first half of the twentieth century. With her lover and later husband Mikhail Larionov, she developed Neo-Primitivism that combined Russian folk art with contemporary aesthetics. She freely took motifs from lubki (cheap Russian popular prints), icons, street signs and children's art for her dynamic designs. Her vision of a modern Apocalypse inspired by the carnage of World War I incorporates traditional Russian iconography with contemporary military uniforms, weapons and airplanes. Goncharova also organized exhibitions, illustrated Futurist books and designed sets for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and other productions. She and Larionov eventually settled in Paris.
