Description
Billy Bishop Stag Chewing Tobacco Calendar Art. Artist: E. Henderson. Date: c1918. Size: 14” x 21” (35.5 x 53.3 cm). Description: Bishop was Canada’s leading combat pilot during WWI. By the end of the war, he had 72 confirmed air victories. His decorations include the Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Order & Bar, Military Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Leion of Honor Chevalier, and the Croix de Guerre with Palm. Stag Chewing Tobacco was one of 160 brand names sold by P. Lorillard and Company of New Jersey. Lorillard was synonymous with the manufacture of all manner of tobacco products including snuff, plug, chewing, and smoking tobacco. The company was known for its aggressive advertising. This image of Bishop is exceedingly uncommon. It is not included in the collection of the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. Neither is it included in the collection of the Billy Bishop Home and Museum in Owen Sound, Ontario. The piece shows a short closed tear near the upper right. From the private collection of Pat & Connie Kent, former operators of Granary Antiques in Fairfield, PEI.
