Description
(1840-1902). Noted American political caricaturist and illustrator whose illustrations from the front lines during the Civil War in Harper's Weekly informed the American public and later drawings lambasted the Tweed Ring. His caricatures of the elephant and donkey became the recognized symbols of the Republican and Democratic parties while his illustrations of Santa Claus became the model of the jolly bearded rotund character known today. Partly printed DS "Th Nast," a bank check, drawn on The First National Bank, Morristown, NJ, Aug 5, 1891. Made payable to "The C.L. Wright Gravure Co." for $67.91. Boldly signed. Light show through of clerking stamps on verso of minimal affect; two minor folds and cut cancellation of no affect; else Fine. Attractively matted with three of his Santa Claus color illustrations and a bust profile portrait of Nast to overall 16"x20".
