Description
A very good Japanese sword cane curio. The curved shaft is natural black birch with a handle that is 7 3/4" long, and 1 1/8" thick. It has a removable wood peg holding the tang. There is a 1 1/2" burnished brass collar at which point, a 19 1/4" sharp, curved steel samurai type blade can be withdrawn from a tight friction mount. It is marked "644" on a copper habaki at the top of the blade, probably a maker's inventory number. A 2" ferrous metal ferrule completes the piece. The overall length as a cane is 35 1/4" and the condition is excellent. It is ca 1910, and it is a great example of the kind. (In 1876, the carrying of swords as a sidearm was banned in Japan. This gave rise to the samurai sword cane so that some could continue to carry a sword, albeit hidden as a cane. See Wikipedia for the history of the samurai sword.) Estimate: $1000-$1500.
