Item Details
Description
A fine silver floral cane by Jacobi & Jenkins, of Baltimore. The long silver mushroom knob handle is 5" high and 1 1/4' across the top. It is beautifully chased in a floral motif with worn owner initials on the smooth top. The ring base is marked "Sterling" with the Jacobi & Jenkins tower mark for 1894-1898. (This prestigious Baltimore silver company was founded in 1879 by A. Jacobi. It underwent several name changes until it was bought out by the Schofield Co. in 1915, that was later bought by the Stieff Company, also of Baltimore. A paper giving the Company history is included with this lot.) The shaft is matte black-painted hardwood with a 7/8" replaced brass ferrule. The overall length is 36" and the condition is very good. The Jacobi & Jenkins firm was among some of the most notable silver makers in 19th Century America. It was the contemporary of such companies as Tiffany, Unger Brothers, Gorham, etc., and enjoyed a fine reputation. Today, examples of their work are eagerly sought after by collectors. Estimate: $750-$950.
