Art is the heart of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ sale Aug. 25-27

THOMASTON, Maine – Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Summer Auction on Aug. 25, 26 and 27 will present an extensive and diverse selection of fine art, ranging from Old Master works to creations by important 20th century artists. The three-day sale will also offer large collections of folk art, marine items, antiquities, early furniture, and 20th century decorative arts. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

On Friday, the focus will be on Maine contemporary art. The Saturday auction will feature early art, folk art, ephemera and fine antiques; and on Sunday, the sale will present 20th century decorative arts and adornments.

Thomaston Place owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux noted: “With an inventory of over 625 paintings, watercolors, graphic arts and sculptures, this auction will be a paradise for anyone who appreciates or collects artwork. More works are now on display in our gallery than can be viewed in most museums.”

A centerpiece of the sale will be an oil on canvas painting by Marsden Hartley (Maine, 1877-1943) titled Landscape, depicting the sun breaking through the clouds over a Maine harbor (est. $80,000-$120,000). Additional highlights will include: a gouache on paper work by Alexander Calder (New York/France, 1898-1976) in its original frame and mat (est. $40,000-$60,000) and an intaglio on handmade paper /mixed media composition by Kenneth Noland (New York/Maine, 1924-2010) (est. $10,000-$15,000). All three of these pieces will be sold on Sunday, August 27.

The large collection of Maine contemporary art to be sold on Friday will include works by Imero Gobbato (ME, 1923-2010), Greg Mort, David Vickery, William Brewster Hoyt, Frederick Kubitz, Scott Moore, John Muench (ME/MA, 1914-1993), Connie Hayes, Carole Hanson, Sal11ly Caldwell Fisher, Cabot Lyford (NH/ME, 1925-2016), Laurence Philip Sisson (MA/ME/NM, 1928-2015) , Carl Spinchorn (NY/ME, 1887-1971), Ron Frontin, Eric Hopkins, and many others.

On Saturday, the auction will present three oil paintings by James Taylor Harwood (UT/CA, 1860-1940), including a depiction of Pont Neuf viewed from the Louvre (below) that was executed while he was living in Paris (est. $20,000-$30,000). A pair of 1830 portraits of Peter and Mary Copeland Atherton of Hallowell, Maine, by William Matthew Prior (MA/ME, 1806-1873) will be offered (est. $8,000-$12,000), along with The Gleaner’s Idyll, an atmospheric painting by Georges Francois Laugee (France, 1853-1937) (est. $10,000-$15,000), plus lovely works by Thomas Hill (CA/MA, 1829-1908) and Charles Warren Eaton (NY/NJ, 1857-1937).

There will also be an outstanding selection of marine paintings by Percy Sanborn (ME, 1849-1929), William Stubbs (ME/MA, 1842-1909), Elisha Taylor Baker (NY/CT, 1827-1890), Antonio Jacobsen (NY/NJ, 1850-1921), James Gale Tyler (CT/NY, 1855-1931), Frank Vining Smith (MA, 1879-1970), and others.

The Saturday sale will offer a comprehensive, professionally presented collection of English Royal Navy autographs, portraits, and documents relating to the period and esteemed career of Lord Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson (est. $20,000-$30,000), along with a set of 50 letters and notes from author and philosopher George Santayana (est. $10,000-$15,000).

Highlights of the folk art and marine collection will include: a 20th century sternboard with eagle by Rockland, Maine, carver Harold B. Simmons (est. $10,000-$15,000); a “stargazer” form black carousel horse by Charles Carmel (est. $4,000-$5,500); a 19th century scrimshaw whale’s tooth depicting a whaling ship under sail, “The Essex, Nantucket, George Pollard Jr., Master” (est. $4,000-$6,000); and a hat form trade sign from a Seneca Falls, N.Y., firefighter supply businesses, Rumsey & Co. Fire Engine Supply Co. (est. $2,500-$3,500).

The Sunday auction will present eight works by legendary artist Waldo Peirce (NY/ME/MA, 1884-1907), including a monumental oil painting depicting two women (Peirce’s second wife, Amy Troutman, and Ernest Hemingway’s first wife, Elizabeth Hadley Richardson) in a French Riviera apartment (est. $20,000-$30,000). Peirce and Hemingway were close friends who met while driving an ambulance in France during World War I.
