CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago police say three people stole a rare, diamond-encrusted clock worth more than $400,000 from an antique show at the city’s Merchandise Mart.
Authorities say two women and a man approached a booth at the show on Sunday afternoon. The man and one woman distracted employees while the other woman took the clock.
Made by Asprey & Co., London, the diamond and sapphire-encrusted clock is believed to have been designed for the Sultan of Brunei.
Lori Paige is chief marketing officer for New Orleans-based M.S. Rau Antiques, which was displaying the clock. She says the Asprey & Co. “Mystery Clock” is valued at $425,000.
Paige says surveillance video from the booth was given to police and she’s hopeful the clock will be found.
In a statement, Bill Rau, the CEO of M.S. Rau Antiques in New Orleans, said, “It was unfortunate that this theft happened during what was otherwise a wonderful and successful show … there was security throughout the Chicago Antiques, Art + Design Show … Our security footage is being reviewed by the police and we’re confident that the criminals will be quickly apprehended and this wonderful timepiece returned.”
