Description
late 19th century, 168 x 91 cm, Central Caucasus
FOKKER, NICOLAS, Caucasian Rugs of Yesterday. London 1979, ill. p. 67
SCHÜRMANN, ULRICH, Caucasian Rugs. Ramsdell 1974, no. 50
The elongated design in the red-brown field of this rare Genje, previously published by Schurmann, is difficult to interpret in iconographic terms. It may be a prayer rug. One indication of this is the two hands at the upper end (hand of Fatima), an ancient Islamic protective symbol that is often found in Baluch prayer rugs.
Signs of age and wear, low pile, a number of repiled areas. The original finishes survive all around.
