Item Details
Description
A tie-dye vest, dyed and stage-worn by The Lovin' Spoonful founder, John Sebastian.

The cotton button-down vest features a green, blue, and teal tie-dye pattern, a mandarin-style collar, two front pockets, and snap button closures. A velour patch is present on the back as well as a pink floral embroidery, both from repairs. No size or label present. Please note: holes and fraying present from age and use.

According to Sebastian, he wore the vest while performing on multiple occasions including on July 21, 1970 at Tanglewood music venue in Lenox, MA. Sebastian chose this vest as a frequent stage piece due to its pockets, where he stored extra guitar picks and his harmonica.

The ensemble was dyed, c. late 1960s- early 1970s, at the 46-acre artistic community near Studio City called "The Farm." At The Farm, Sebastian was nicknamed "guitar fingers" due to his tight grip on his fabric (strength gained from playing the guitar) during the tie-dye process.
