Pierre-Jean David d'Angers dedicated his extensive career as a sculptor to creating sculptural monuments honoring the accomplishments of notable individuals. In the 1820s, he focused on producing contemporary medallic portraits of esteemed figures, such as the sitter above, Augustin Thierry. A French historian, Thierry was influenced by the works of Sir Walter Scott and focused on historical events with a dramatic flair, including the Germanic invasions, the Norman Conquest, and the rise of parliamentary institutions. David also crafted portrait medallions of Auguste Dominique Ingres and Horace Vernet, which are now part of the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
