Painting in oil on canvas Wifredo Lam was born on December 8, 1902 in Sagua la Grande, in Cuba. He is the eighth child of Lam-Yam, born in Cantón, and Ana Serafina Castilla, born in Cuba and a mixed-race descendant of families of Spanish and African origin. By the early 1930s his surrealist influence was evident, as was that of Henri Matisse. In 1936, visiting a Pablo Picasso exhibition, he felt strongly drawn to him, both artistically and politically. In 1938 he went to live in Paris, where Picasso himself took him under his wing and nurtured his interest in African art and primitive masks. In that same year he traveled to Mexico, where he stayed with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Lam's varied multicultural heritage, as well as his relationship with Santeria, is extensively manifested in the artist's work.
