Item Details
Description
Last quarter of the 19th century. Cylindrical, 6 3/4”, 4 1/4” height. The body covered with red coarse weave cloth and overlaid with a panel of finely loomed bead work in mystical motifs and iconic colors. The back with a delicate fall of multicolored bead strands on a rectangular beaded panel. A couple of the strands incomplete (easily restored if desired) and the main body complete and tight. Dating to the period of very active headhunting in Borneo. The beads and cloth are European or American trade material and may be compared to woodland Indian pouches and bags of the 1880 period, made of identical materials. The designs of the main panel are iconic and found on Dayak baby carriers as well. Beautifully mounted on a Plexiglas pedestal supporting a custom gray cloth cover armature. Very rare and extraordinary preservation for the period.
