Description
Late 19th century. Intricately made form a single piece of wood. 40" overall, oval with large central boss and integral hand grip opposite. The field pierced with vertical rows of holes and surface, both sides, covered with a matrix of delicately split cane in horizontal segments connecting the holes. Additional braided split cane connecting the holes vertically, resulting in a fine lattice effect. The top and bottom with additional chevron weaving. The edge covered in fur bearing hide. Just a few small wear spots to the hide. The delicate cane just about 100% intact with few minor scuffs and losses only. Buganda is a kingdom on the north shore of Lake Victoria in the Nile Basin tracing is lineage to the 14th century. It was contacted by Arab traders in the 1830s and colonized by the British in the 1890s.
